About this route
The West Frisian ring dyke is a centuries-old dyke of more than 120 kilometres around West Friesland. This route follows the dyke villages east of Schagen: Haringhuizen, Barsingerhorn and Kolhorn. Kolhorn used to be a fishing village on the Zuiderzee; the old harbour and cottages are still easy to recognise. On the way back you cycle through the polder via Waarland, with wide views and plenty of meadow birds.
Good to know
- It is often windy on the dyke. Check the wind forecast for the coming days on our homepage.
- Bring binoculars: there are lots of birds along the dyke and in the polder.
- Fancy the whole ring dyke? At over 120 kilometres it makes a great long weekend.
