Every Thursday in summer

The West Frisian Market in Schagen

For ten Thursdays, the centre of Schagen is all about West Frisian folklore: a parade with horses and carriages, dancing in traditional dress and old crafts. From the marina it is just a short walk.

What is it?

The West Frisian Market has been a fixture in Schagen for decades. Every Thursday in July and August, running into the first week of September, the town centre comes alive with the traditions of West Friesland. Entry is free.

The parade

The highlight of the day is the parade at around 11 am. Participants in authentic West Frisian costume walk or ride on farm wagons, chaises and landaus through the centre, drawn by beautiful horses and accompanied by a farmers' band. The parade passes twice, so there is no need to claim a spot early.

Dancing, crafts and market

After the parade there is dancing in traditional dress on the square. Around it you will find old crafts, such as a woodturner, and a curiosities and craft market. The market runs from about half past eight until three o'clock.

A different theme every week

Each Thursday has its own theme. In 2026 these included the Day of Old Crafts, the Day of Dance, the Day of Traditional Dress, the Day of Music, the Day of the Child and ring tilting around the church. On some Thursdays you can even have yourself dressed in West Frisian costume.

From the marina

The town centre is about 500 metres from the marina. Moor your boat or park your motorhome, and you are at the market within a few minutes. Tip: arrive on Wednesday, so you are rested on Thursday morning and in time for the parade. The rest of the year, Thursday is the regular weekly market day in Schagen.

Dates and programme
